Tips on Breeder selection

When selecting a breeder, there are general guidelines one should follow:

A reputable breeder will use a written contract.

A reputable breeder will furnish you with the puppy's vaccination and worming information and schedule.

A reputable breeder will ask you many questions, which will help him understand your needs and concerns, and should be able to address these to your satisfaction, this will also help him help you choose the appropriate puppy for you.

A reputable breeder will be available to answer your questions and concerns before and after the purchase of one of his puppies.

A reputable breeder's kennel should be clean and well kept.  His dogs should appear confident and unstressed with him.

A reputable breeder will not try to force you on any particular dog, and will allow you to voice your opinions.

A reputable breeder will allow you the time you need to select and choose.

A reputable breeder should help you understand the need for appropriate preparations needed for the puppy.

A reputable breeder will have references available so you can talk to past buyers from his kennel.

Questions you should ask a breeder:

Ask about the background of his dogs.

What type of socialization this puppy has had, if any?

Why did he pick this particular breeding?

What did he expect from this breeding, and   were these expectations met?

What type of training do his dogs have, and   what type of training does he perform?

Does he compete with his dogs? And in  what type of shows (obedience,  conformation, herding, agility, tracking, Schutzhund)?

Ask to see the kennels, adult dogs, and littermates.
